The strangeness that is Family...

Once upon a time, on a different continent than the one on which I currently reside, there was a young (married) man, and a young (presumed widowed) woman who met, and fell in love. Times were different then, as the young men of that day (and some young women) were heading off en masse to fight across the Channel, and many never expected that they'd ever make it home again alive. This particular young man and woman, as I said, fell in love, and through that love, produced two beautiful daughters. The war ended, and due to a very sad although not entirely unexpected set of circumstances, these daughters were put up for adoption, individually. Fast forward forty, fifty years, to the almost present day. The eldest daughter of this young man has located her half siblings, and the family rejoices!! Sadly, the father did not live to see this day, but we all knew he was watching from heaven, rejoicing with us all. The eldest child, who had indeed lived a happy life with her family, started the search for her only full blood sibling. She is determined to find her sister, and share this sense of family and belonging with her. Forward another decade and a bit, and the sister has been found!! She has contacted her oldest sister, who never, ever gave up looking. A family has been reconnected, and we must do what we can to keep it that way...

I am in the midst of contacting my Aunt in England, to make arrangements for us to meet while we are in France. I now will have the opportunity to meet my other Aunt, as well. I am truly delighted that my Aunt has found her sister, and that my Grandfather's children will all have a chance to know and love each other. It was a truly sad, appalling, and tragic set of happenings that prevented his daughters from coming to live with him in Canada after the war. But we cannot judge, because we were not there, living through those terrible, fantastic days at the end of World War Two, as Britain and her people tried to put themselves back together the best they could.
